That’s not what margarine is for!
Imperial Margarine spokesperson Bill Simpson agrees but says “who are we to tell people how to use our product? After all, we sell margarine, not morality.”

Word of the Day - 3/30
3/30/2005 12:29:00 PMGood Morning Folks! Sorry I missed yesterday's word--I'm going to try to get two out today to make up for it--one right now, and hopefully another in the afternoon. Enjoy! Cogito: I'm sure all of you have heard the cogito, even if you haven't heard of "the cogito"--it's Descarte's famous statement "cogito, ergo sum"--"I think, therefore I am". Looking at the picture, the cloud next to the big mountain seems like a thought bubble--like those from a comic strip. Don't worry, I'm not going to ask what the mountain might be thinking (although, who has more on their mind, Mr. Mountain, or Stan the Man?). No, what I'm concerned with here is the fact that thoughts are represented as clouds--and in the picture, we have two mountains, each with a cloud. I like the thought that, though the mountains can't move, there is hope that the clouds might drift...eh, I'm not even going to finish that sentence, which would end up being unforgiveably hokey:). But anyway, I'm sure (unfortunately) that you see where I was going with that :). Have a great day everyone! p.s--a thought about speech bubbles/thought clouds in comic strips: I never really read comic strips as a child (or now, for that matter) and I think that one reason is the fact that the speech bubbles always bothered me. The words, after all, were imprisoned in the speech bubble, if you know what I mean. I thought that at the very least, the cloud should be used for speech, and the bubble should be used for thought (the idea being that speech is more readily accessible to the outside world than thought, and so less confined). But then, maybe this isn't true--maybe it's not such a bad thought that what we don't say is no less accessible than what we do say. Maybe there should be speech clouds AND thought clouds...there's a thought for you... Image of the Day File Under Word of the Day! |

Word of the Day - 3/28
3/28/2005 11:29:00 AMGood Morning Folks! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend, and a happy Easter! TBurt's photo today is, well--just take a look at TBurt's photo. It's a good one for a Monday, I think--it gets the week off to a spirited start (emphasis on the "spirit", if you know what I mean:)). This apparently is a group photo of some folks from TBurt's ski club (anyone want to join??:))--I'm paying particular attention here to the very cheery looking barechested guy (who isn't really a member--so those of you who were going to join for the sake of his company, don't bother:)). With that in mind, the word of the day is: HEEEEEY: This should be said with an obnoxious (slightly slurred perhaps?) accent. It's meanings are many and diverse, but in this case, I think it seems to suggest a certain uninhibited zeal for just about anything. Actually--let's make today's WotD interactive--I'll make one or two suggestions as to what our jolly pal there in the picture has in mind--and you folks can (if you'd like) email me some of your own ideas. At the end of the day, I'll post an addendum with all of your responses (I'll credit anyone that responds...unless you'd like to remain anonymous). Personally, I think Stan the Man (not made up) has taken a liking to the camera person (this is pretty unfortunate, in light of the fact that the camera person is of course WotD's own TBurt). Ok folks--get cracking--I hope to see some good responses!! P.S--TBurt assures me that Stan the Man is in fact exactly 6the upstanding citizen that this picture would suggest:) Image of the Day File Under Word of the Day! |
