Word of the Day - 3/4Like it or not, I'm back for today's entry--thanks again to Kristin for such a fine relief effort yesterday! And, without further ado the word(s) of the day are:
Scylla and Charybdis: Sure, I'm cheating--they're two words, but they're always used together--so why reinvent the wheel? Anyway, Scylla and Charybdis appear in the Oddyssey--they are two sea monsters who live on either side of a strait through which Oddysseus must travel on his way home. If he were to bring his ships too close to one (Scylla, I think), she would pluck sailors from the ship and eat them. If he were to bring his ships too close to the other, she would suck water from the strait, thus sinking the ships. So then, to be "caught between the Scylla and Charybdis" is to be stuck between two equally unappealing choices. Looking at Tom's picture, we see a doorway framed by two trees (what the heck, let's call them Scylla and Charybdis), such that one's attention is drawn (invariably, I think) to the doorway. My point here is this--that the Scylla and Charybdis might not be so scary--in the picture, they even seem beautiful--because after all, to walk between the two is eventually to fall happily at one's doorstep--wherever home might be.
p.s--TBurt is away next week (throwing himself down mountains with a couple of sticks on his feet, I hear:))--so we'll have guest photos--I already have a couple lined up, but if you have any that you'd like to submit, send them
my way! Have a wonderful weekend!!
