Word of the Day - 3/30

Good Morning Folks!

Sorry I missed yesterday's word--I'm going to try to get two out today to make up for it--one right now, and hopefully another in the afternoon. Enjoy!

Cogito: I'm sure all of you have heard the cogito, even if you haven't heard of "the cogito"--it's Descarte's famous statement "cogito, ergo sum"--"I think, therefore I am". Looking at the picture, the cloud next to the big mountain seems like a thought bubble--like those from a comic strip. Don't worry, I'm not going to ask what the mountain might be thinking (although, who has more on their mind, Mr. Mountain, or Stan the Man?). No, what I'm concerned with here is the fact that thoughts are represented as clouds--and in the picture, we have two mountains, each with a cloud. I like the thought that, though the mountains can't move, there is hope that the clouds might drift...eh, I'm not even going to finish that sentence, which would end up being unforgiveably hokey:). But anyway, I'm sure (unfortunately) that you see where I was going with that :). Have a great day everyone!

p.s--a thought about speech bubbles/thought clouds in comic strips: I never really read comic strips as a child (or now, for that matter) and I think that one reason is the fact that the speech bubbles always bothered me. The words, after all, were imprisoned in the speech bubble, if you know what I mean. I thought that at the very least, the cloud should be used for speech, and the bubble should be used for thought (the idea being that speech is more readily accessible to the outside world than thought, and so less confined). But then, maybe this isn't true--maybe it's not such a bad thought that what we don't say is no less accessible than what we do say. Maybe there should be speech clouds AND thought clouds...there's a thought for you...
