Word of the Day - 3/2Today's word is one that many of you may already know--but hopefully the entry won't seem worse for that fact. Here you go:
Foil: A foil is something laid beneath a stone to make it shine more brightly than it otherwise would shine. I suppose it's generally (or always?--you jewelry buffs out there want to help me?) used with stones that don't naturally shine so brightly--but we can ignore that for today, because in Tom's picture I think we see two foils, and two gems--and both rather beautiful in their own right. Of course the greenery in the center of the picture makes the flowers (which need no foil) shine still more brightly for the contrast--but I think it's also true that the flowers, by infusing the picture with a bit of color, allow us to see the beauty in those long rows of grape plants that might otherwise seem simply green. So then, beauty here acts as a foil for beauty--and to me, that seems like a nice thought. I hope you all agree!
p.s--I also like the way both plants are angled in the picture--but I've had my say, and now I'll shut up:)
